View Full Version : Question about opening multiple files

I've noticed that I can open multiple drawings from the file menu, but if I have Cad Viewer open and double-click a drawing in Windows Explorer it doesn't seem to open the new drawing. It does bring the Cad Viewer window to the front, but doesn't seem to open the file. I was wondering if this was by design (and if so, it seems counter-intuitive to other Windows apps) or if this is not behaving correctly.
I am currently using version 5.0 A.44 which I downloaded yesterday.

Hi,
It should open the file.
- does the same file open ok if it is opened directly via the CAD Viewer browse window?
- what type of file is it?
- what OS are you running?
thanks

Yes, the same file will open correctly if I use the File/Open command.
It is an AutoCAD file (2000 format, I believe)
I am running Windows 2000, but I have seen the same behavior on another machine here with Windows XP.
I just thought of something that may be related. The files I am trying to open are on a network path (also with spaces within the directory names). I then tried to copy the files locally on my desktop and the CAD Viewer application seems to work correctly. However, as I said above, the File/Open command works even over the network.

Hi,
We were able to find a problem when there are a large number of spaces in the file path (> 18). The latest software update (CAD Viewer 5.0 A.45) should fix it.
It is here. (http://www.guthcad.com/dlviewer.htm)
Thanks for reporting the problem.

Unfortunately, that does not seem to have resolved my issue. The odd thing is that if CAD Viewer is not open, then the file opens correctly, but if I already have a file open in CAD Viewer, it does not open.
I wonder if maybe there is something else special about the network path of the files which I am trying to open. I don't know if it helps, but the actual path looks like this: K:\2. Electrical\Stock Jobs\3. PCBs\EFN01105 NPAQ CONTROL (ULTRA) Rev B2
I actually just did some experimentation, and if I put several drawings at the root of the K:\ network drive, it works correctly, however if I move them to K:\2. Electrical\ the problem occurs. My first thought was perhaps the . was causing a problem, but I created a "test.dwg" directory on my local drive and the application functioned properly.
I then tried creating a "2. Electrical" directory on my local drive and it exhibited the same problem as it did from the network. So I then tried a "test. dwg" (notice the space after the .) and this also failed. So, I suspect that, somehow, the . followed by a space in the path is causing this issue.
Hope this helps to troubleshoot the problem.
Regards,
Matt
