Good afternoon,

I get the following error message instantly after click on almost every cad file except for the test file in the program directory:

“critical error 5, AD error 56 (error loading objects), terminating”

This is cad2shape V 3.0 A.22

My OS is Windows XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 2

As all the settings fields are greyed out before I click on a file the only settings I can report are as follows:

File type “.dwg”

Settings pop up box: Output format : ESRI shape file No additional boxes checked, projection type: no projection, units: degrees, base and direction: x axis = 0

Need some help here.

Hi Jud,

Not sure what is causing that. Are you able to email us one of the DWG files so that we can investigate further?

Thanks,
Software Support

Jud,

Thanks for sending an example drawing.

The drawing that you sent (and I expect the same will apply to your other drawings that are crashing CAD2Shape) has a huge number of defined 'Layer States'
- I estimate 10,000+. If you open the 'Layers' dialog in AutoCAD you will see what I mean.

All except maybe 1 or 2 of these do not seem to be doing anything useful, just taking up space, and slowing down normal operations on the drawing (e.g. just opening the Layers dialog here took about 2 minutes!)

As an experiment we deleted all the 'Layer States' except 'Normal'. I have emailed you back the resultant DWG. (A side benefit is that the drawing size is reduced to about 1/3!)

CAD2Shape handles the resultant drawing without any problems.

So I am not sure how many of these type of drawings that you have. I would recommend clearing out all the unused Layer States from them. Certainly if you can do that CAD2Shape should have no problems translating them.

If you simply have too many of these type of drawings, please let us know, and we will schedule to implement a fix or workaround for it.

best regards,
