The problem:

When CAD Viewer 4.0 is installed by an administrator on an XP system, a user with 'Restricted user' group membership cannot run the software.

All CAD Viewer versions 4.0 A.01 to A.144 are affected.

Reason that the problem occurs:

The user folder, which by default is installed as a sub-folder of the CAD Viewer installation folder has been restricted by the operating system to not allow write access by a Restricted user. CAD Viewer needs to have write access to this folder.

Solution 1:

A new update of the software will be available at the beginning of January 2006 to fix it.

Solution 2:

Change the security settings on the folder where CAD Viewer is installed to allow Restricted users write access. For example if the installation folder was "C:\cadviewer", then locate this folder via My Computer, and click 'Properties'. In the 'security' tab highlight the Restricted Users group (probably just called 'Users ..') and check the permissions setting 'Full Control' - 'Allow'.

This item is resolved as of CAD Viewer 4.0 A.145.

I've noticed that when I install the software in Xp Pro, the program group and desktop shortcut are placed in the current user directory under the documents and settings directory. For example, if you are logged in as the administrator, the desktop shortcut is placed only on the administrator's desktop (not the "All Users" desktop. Also, the start-menu group is placed only in the administrator's start menu (not the "All Users" start menu.

I've worked around this problem by:
Install the program normally
restart the computer
use windows explorer to MOVE C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\start menu\programs\CAD Viewer to the "All Users" start menu\programs directory After moving the directory, I add the everyone group to the security list with full control to make sure all authenticated users can use the software. (I also move the desktop shortcut from the administrator's profile to the all users desktop (then set the security on the shortcut)

finally, I check the security setting on the program directory itself to make sure all users have rights to access it.

Hi,

We have taken the lead from your suggestion, and added in a setup option to install for all users on the computer, or just the current user. It is available in CAD Viewer 4.0 A.148 or above, currently at the 'maintenance' link here.

http://www.guthcad.com/dlviewer_beta.htm

Also, the software now automatically configures itself to store settings and temporary work files in the user Application Data folder, instead of using WorkfileDir as defined in CADVIEWER.INI as was required in previous CAD Viewer versions.

best regards,
