A simple method of creating plot files is to install one of Hewlett-Packard's HPGL2 plotter drivers onto your windows system. Install driver using 'Add Printer', selecting the printer port to be 'FILE:'
Don't use the earlier model HPGL drivers which output HPGL version 1 (e.g. the standard driver shipped with Windows). The output quality for HPGL version 1 is poor compared with HPGL2.
Instead download an HP-GL/2 driver from the HP website.
The best driver that we have found is the 'HP DesignJet 500 42+HPGL2 Card'. This driver can be downloaded from the http://www.hp.com website:
- click on 'Software & Driver Downloads'.
- enter the printer model as 'HP DesignJet 500'
- select 'HP DesignJet 500 42-in Roll printer'
- after entering your Windows operating system download:
- HP Designjet 500 + HP-GL/2 accessory card Windows driver (for Windows and AutoCAD 2000 - AutoCAD 2005)
- run the download file selecting a temporary unzip folder
- in Windows' 'Add Printer' select 'Have disk' and navigate to the temporary unzip folder
Now anytime you need to create an HP-GL2 plot file, just go through the normal print method and select 'HP DesignJet 500 42+HPGL2 Card' as the printer.
The resultant plot can be viewed using CAD Viewer. http://www.guthcad.com/dlviewer.htm
