How to use OCR and create a FAI report from a PDF drawing in QA-CAD 2019
If you can not extract data from your drawing in QA-CAD, your drawing is image-only drawing.
In this case, please use a free OCR (optical character recognition) tool with QA-CAD.
• Install GT text software (free OCR tool)
• Capture image data from your drawing and convert to editable text data by OCR
• Export captured data to a EXCEL file
In this video, a built-in AS9102B EXCEL template file is used as an example. Of course,
you can capture and use OCR with PPAP form or your customized inspection form.
Please follow these steps to capture image data and convert to editable text by OCR.
This short video clip shows how to use OCR and create a First Article Inspection Report from image-only PDF in QA-CAD.
Step 2: Once you finish the GT Text software installation, check system tray in your PC. If you see this icon (red G), GT Text is already running in your PC. So you are ready to use OCR in QA-CAD.
Step 3: Open your PDF drawing file in QA-CAD. Select File > Open
Step 4: Select your PDF drawing file, Image file or CAD file. Press OK.
Step 5: Select QA > Add QA symbol.
Step 6: Tick Attach Attributes and Capture Dimension Value. Press OK button.
Step 7: Move your mouse cursor near text or dimension you want to capture.
Press [Alt] key and [c] key together (They are hot keys in GT Text software).
Then press left mouse button to draw and select an box area that you want to capture and use OCR.
(This is just a suggestion. Selecting from left bottom to right top tends to create good OCR result.) Please select only your target for better OCR accuracy.
Step 8: Then an OCR result pops up in a small window. If the result is ok,
press continue button. If press try again, the OCR program shows an alternative OCR result.
Please note that OCR can not guarantee 100% accuracy in reality. Always double-check the result with your own eyes.
Step 9: Click a left mouse button then QA-CAD draws a balloon in the drawing (the blow gif animation covers from step7 to step11).
Step 10: Click a right mouse button on top of the balloon. Then a empty attributes window opens.
Step 11: Move your mouse cursor to dimension attribute filed and press [ctrl] key and [v] key together
to paste the OCR result into this field. Correct the result if necessary. Then press OK button.
Tips: If you would like to capture dimension and tolerance, capture and paste separately.
Step 12: Repeat from 7 to 11 until you finish placing all balloons.
Tips: you can place, capture and use OCR one balloon by one balloon. Or alternatively, you can place all balloons first, then you can capture and use OCR.
Step 15: Select QA > Export Attributes.
Step 16: Choose EXCEL and Template 'AS9102B' and Press OK button.
Step 17: Type your EXCEL file name and press Save button. QA-CAD asks 'Would you like to view the saved file?', then press Yes button.
Step 18: EXCEL file with your captured attributes will be open on your EXCEL or spreadsheet software.
Step 19: Select File > Save Markup Edits to save the work ballooned drawing (This operation generates a CVM file which stores all overlaid balloons and markup information. The original drawing is untouched).
Step 20: Select File > Publish to PDF to save the delivery ballooned drawing.
